Previously, Cam Thanh has earned several domestic and international recognitions, including the “Typical Tourism Destination of Asia – Pacific” title awarded by UNESCO in 2023 for its Bay Mau Nipa Palm Forest, or “Top 25 Most Attractive Boat Tours in the World” in 2024 for its basket-boat experience.

Over the years, Cam Thanh and its Bay Mau Coconut Forest have become a magnet for visitors from around the world. In 2024, the forest welcomed more than 1.1 million visitors, generating nearly VND 31 billion in revenue.

Community benefits

The suburban areas of Hoi An Ancient Town are now home to many traditional craft villages that are several hundred years old, most of which have now developed in the direction of tourism. The results not only help to preserve the craft villages firmly but also contribute to creating stable livelihoods and incomes for local people.

Hoi An Old Town

As of late September 2025, Hoi An Dong Ward had 1,347 people being involved in basket-boat transport and tour services at the Bay Mau Nipa Palm Forest, earning an average monthly income of VND 10 – 15 million. Notably, many of these workers are women and the elderly.

For Thanh Ha Pottery Village and Tra Que Vegetable Village, tourism development has had a positive impact on the local community. Aside from generating steady income for residents directly involved in performing traditional crafts and guiding experiential tours, it has also created valuable resources to support heritage preservation and craft revitalization.

Similarly, in Tra Que Vegetable Village, the implementation of tour guiding activities has brought many benefits to the community. In addition to creating direct income for participating households, these activities have strengthened community engagement and promoted sustainable rural tourism development.
