The annual list, compiled by Forbes contributor William P. Barrett, evaluates overseas retirement destinations based on factors including cost of living, healthcare, climate, residency options, safety and overall quality of life. Vietnam stands out for offering retirees a combination of low living costs, modern urban conveniences and easy access to beaches, mountains and cultural heritage.

For many international retirees, Vietnam’s affordability remains one of its strongest advantages. Comfortable lifestyles are possible at a fraction of the cost of many Western countries, while major cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An and Da Nang provide expanding healthcare services, international communities and reliable infrastructure.

The country’s diverse geography is another key attraction. Retirees can choose between bustling metropolitan centers, tranquil coastal destinations or cooler mountain regions, all within relatively short travel distances. Vietnam also offers a rich culinary scene, vibrant street life and a calendar filled with cultural festivals that appeal to long-term foreign residents.

The recognition reflects Vietnam’s broader rise as an international lifestyle destination. In recent years, the country has received numerous accolades from global travel publications for its hospitality, luxury resorts and natural attractions. Growing investment in tourism infrastructure and improved international connectivity have further strengthened its reputation among overseas visitors and expatriates.

While Forbes notes that prospective retirees should carefully consider local visa regulations, taxation, healthcare coverage and long-term residency requirements before relocating, Vietnam’s inclusion in the 2026 ranking underscores its increasing competitiveness among the world’s leading retirement destinations.

As global retirees continue seeking destinations that combine affordability with high quality of life, Vietnam is increasingly emerging as one of Asia’s most attractive options for those looking to enjoy their retirement abroad.
