Shopping meets culture and local identity

Ho Chi Minh City’s position in the ranking reflects the city’s ability to combine shopping with broader cultural and travel experiences.

From traditional handicrafts and Vietnamese coffee to contemporary fashion and locally designed products, shopping provides visitors with opportunities to discover different aspects of Vietnamese culture. Historic markets and streets stand alongside modern commercial centres, creating a diverse retail landscape within the city.

The ranking also highlights the importance of local identity in shaping a destination’s shopping appeal. Rather than focusing solely on international luxury brands, the 2026 list considers traditional markets, independent boutiques, artisan products, affordability and unique shopping experiences.

Strengthening Ho Chi Minh City’s international tourism appeal

Ho Chi Minh City’s 16th-place ranking adds another international recognition to the city’s growing tourism profile. Its combination of urban energy, culinary culture, heritage, entertainment and shopping makes it an increasingly attractive destination for international travellers.

With its diverse retail offerings and distinctive local products, Ho Chi Minh City demonstrates how shopping can become an important part of the overall visitor experience, while also creating opportunities for travellers to connect with Vietnamese culture and local lifestyles.

The Travel And Tour World ranking assessed more than 100 destinations before selecting the final 50. The editorial methodology considered shopping diversity, local shopping culture, luxury retail, budget shopping, iconic shopping areas, unique shopping experiences, accessibility, traveller appeal, sustainability and local value.
